Improve Your Game with a Zen State of Mind

The key to a successful Zen tennis match is to have the proverbial four (4) C’s. Let’s shout’em out. 1.) Committment 2.) Confidence 3.) Concentration and 4.) Control. We will demonstrate how these Zen-like factors can be a game changer.

Committment
In tennis it’s important to maintain a level of commitment both to the game and to yourself before stepping into the green court. Say to yourself, “I am here, I am present, I am tennis, I am having fun, I am a winner!” These chants will help your mind and body fuse the tennis activity to more than just a sport. It creates harmony.

Confidence
It’s easy to lose your confidence after whiffing the last ball, or bailing on lob on woulda been a slam. The key is to be confident in your skills and fundamentals. Take extra time like a hard-working Roderick and glide like a Sampras when working on your fundamentals. Winners work hard at the basics and incorporate their specialties after they have reached a level of confidence. Working hard on your craft builds confidence.

Concentration
Fine tuning the mind and the body for Zen-like tennis is to match them equally with steady concentration. If you have had a bad day, shake it off before you enter the court which is your temple. Focus on what is positive and keep your body fit as to express your harmony with life. Tennis is an excercise of all those things you would otherwise not have success. For you tennis is success.

Control
Like a Zen masters, control is an illusion. You must understand that it is fleeting and only serves the ego for now and grants personal dissapointment later. An example of control, is a running river is wild and free, but diverting it’s energy or channeling its flow to your liking. Then it overflows and control ceases to exist. Your tennis game is an advancement of plays that betters your mental state and when it offers no control on that day when you need it. Accept it and be one with the ups and downs of the game.
