Adequate stamina and power is not possible without proper hydration. Water is one of the greatest sources of energy which will keep our body and mind moving. To be in optimum body condition, a player must make sure that he is properly hydrated. However, hydration before the game does not mean congesting yourself with gallons of water on the same day or the day before. Rehydration therapy works when done in a long term manner.
Aside from the energy water provides us, it also helps give us oxygen. Oxygen is very important especially when doing heavy activities like playing a hockey game. How does water give us oxygen?
Our blood delivers the oxygen to each part of the body. It carries red blood cells which serve as tiny cars where oxygen is stored. Conversely, the more blood or red blood cells we have, the more oxygen is delivered to our tissues. Blood is made up of 90% water. Logically, if we have more water in our body, we have more blood, thus, more oxygen to be consumed to support our activities.
As mentioned earlier, rehydration is a long-term therapy. Consuming gallons of water all at once will not be effective. You will just end up feeling bloated and it might also result to fluid volume overload which is very dangerous. What you want to do is take in adequate amount of water at divided times. Spread the consumption of water equally in a day. This is the proper way of rehydrating.
Rehydration therapy is not only about consuming. It is also about taking in less – less salt, less sugar. Monitor your intake of sugar and salt because this affects your hydration. Do not consume foods or drinks with lots of salt. With sugar, you can still take in some but in a moderate amount since sugar is also needed for energy build-up.
Water work wonders. If you want to receive hockey trophies or a hockey award, hydrate yourself properly before any game.
